Portugal’s Food Basket Climbs €2.40 in a Week to €255.95

A basket of 63 essential foods in Portugal now costs €255.95, DECO PROteste says. See which items rose most this week, this year and since 2022.

The 63 basic foods tracked by DECO PROteste (a Portuguese consumer watchdog) cost €255.95 in supermarkets as of Wednesday, Nov. 4. That is €2.40 more than a week earlier, and it ends two weeks in a row in which the basket had become cheaper, according to figures reported by Portugal Resident.

For anyone doing a weekly shop in Lisbon or elsewhere in the country, the bill keeps creeping up. Since the start of 2026 the same basket has gained €14.12, a rise of 5.84%.

What it means for household budgets

A year ago the same groceries were cheaper too. Shoppers now pay €11.61 more for the basket than at this point last year, an increase of 4.75%.

The longer view shows how far prices have moved. When DECO PROteste started monitoring the basket in January 2022, it cost €68.25 less than it does today. Over less than five years, that works out to a rise of 36.36%, according to the organisation.

The occasional weekly drop has not reversed that trend. The basket fell for two weeks before this latest increase, and it still sits well above where it started the year.

Biscuits, cereals and coffee led this week’s increases

Breakfast items moved most between Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. Maria biscuits and wholegrain cereals both went up by 14%, to €2.89 and €4.06 respectively. Ground roasted coffee was close behind, up 12% to €4.97.

Tomatoes and salted cod cost 35% more than a year ago

Over the year, two staples stand out. Plum tomatoes and large salted cod (bacalhau) are each 35% more expensive than in November 2025. Plum tomatoes now cost €2.89 per kilogram, while large salted cod has reached €21.98 per kilogram.

Heart cabbage has also climbed, rising 22% over the year to €1.71 per kilogram.

The items that have doubled since 2022

DECO PROteste’s comparison with January 2022 shows a few products growing much faster than the basket as a whole:

  • Beef for stewing is up 120% and now costs €12.80 per kilogram.
  • Large salted cod has risen 107%, to €21.98 per kilogram.
  • Eggs are 79% more expensive and now cost €2.04.

Meat and fish account for the biggest jumps on that list, so households that cook these regularly feel the change more than the basket average suggests.

How the basket is measured

DECO PROteste follows the prices of the same 63 essential food products in supermarkets to see how grocery costs change from week to week. Because the list stays fixed, the figures compare like with like over time, from the first readings in January 2022 to this week’s total.

The organisation also runs an online tool that lets consumers compare prices between supermarkets. The next weekly reading will show whether the latest rise holds or whether prices dip again, as they did in the two weeks before Nov. 4.
