Carris runs six tram lines in Lisbon as of November 2026: 12E, 15E, 18E, 24E, 25E and 28E. A tram ticket bought on board costs €3.30, while a €1.90 Carris/Metro ticket on a Navegante card covers an hour of travel. All four historic lifts, Glória, Bica, Lavra and Santa Justa, are listed as temporarily closed.

The closures follow the Glória funicular crash of 3 September 2025. The one working funicular is the modern Graça funicular between Mouraria and Graça, which reopened on 30 April 2026. Fares below are from the Carris price list in force since 1 January 2026.

Which tram lines run in Lisbon?

Six lines, according to the Carris route list. Line numbers ending in E are trams (elétricos); Carris runs both historic trams and modern articulated ones.

Line Route
12E Martim Moniz to Praça Luís de Camões
15E Cais do Sodré to Algés
18E Cais do Sodré to Cemitério da Ajuda
24E Praça Luís de Camões to Campolide
25E Praça da Figueira to Campo de Ourique (Prazeres)
28E Martim Moniz to Campo de Ourique (Prazeres)

The 28E climbs through Graça, Alfama, the Sé, Baixa, Chiado and Estrela. On weekdays in the winter timetable the first departure listed on the Carris line page is at 05:40 and the last after 23:00. New timetables for the 28E and several bus lines took effect on 2 November 2026, so check the line page before you travel.

How much does a tram ride cost?

It depends on how you pay. Carris prices from 1 January 2026:

Ticket Price What it covers
Tram fare bought on board €3.30 One trip
Carris/Metro ticket on a Navegante occasional card €1.90 1 hour on the whole Carris and Metro network
Zapping (stored value) per Carris trip €1.72 1 hour on the Carris network
24-hour Carris/Metro ticket €7.25 24 hours on Carris and Metro
Navegante occasional card €0.50 Reusable card for single tickets and zapping
Lifts (ascensores), when open €4.30 Up to 2 trips
Santa Justa lift, when open €6.20 Up to 2 trips plus the viewpoint

Monthly passes are valid on trams and on the Graça funicular. The Navegante Municipal costs €30 and the Navegante Metropolitano €40; both are explained in our guide to the Navegante pass in Lisbon. People aged 65 and over with a tax address in Lisbon can get the Navegante urbano senior pass free, under a city council measure from 2022.

What happened to the Glória funicular?

On 3 September 2025 the Glória funicular, which links Restauradores with Bairro Alto, derailed and crashed; 16 people died. The accident investigation office GPIAAF (Gabinete de Prevenção e Investigação de Acidentes com Aeronaves e de Acidentes Ferroviários) found in its preliminary report of October 2025 that the cable that broke did not match Carris’s specification and was not certified for passenger installations, and that the same type of cable had been fitted on the Lavra lift.

The GPIAAF recommended keeping the lifts stopped. Its final report was due on the first anniversary but was postponed; news reports in August 2026 said it is now expected by the end of the first quarter of 2027. A criminal investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office is also under way.

Are Glória, Bica, Lavra and Santa Justa open?

No. On 5 November 2026 the Carris page on the lifts and its other fleet pages list all four as temporarily closed. Carris runs replacement bus routes on the same hills:

  • Glória: line 51E, a loop from Restauradores through Rossio, Chiado and Largo do Carmo, 07:00 to 21:30.
  • Bica: line 22B, Cais do Sodré to Príncipe Real.
  • Lavra: line 19B, Campo Mártires da Pátria to São Bento.

Carris presented its plan for Glória on 31 August 2026: the old funicular will be replaced by a new, certified system, to be designed and built under an international tender planned for the first quarter of 2027, with opening targeted for 2029. The company has given the same direction for Lavra but no reopening date for Bica or Santa Justa. Treat 2029 as a target that depends on the tender and on works in a historic street.

Is the Graça funicular running?

Yes. The Graça funicular, opened in 2024 and winner of the Valmor architecture prize that year, was closed for safety checks and reopened on 30 April 2026 after the transport regulator IMT renewed its operating license. Since 15 May 2026 it runs every day from 07:00 to 21:00. Each car takes 14 passengers.

In its first two weeks Carris counted more than 3,600 riders, about 70% of them on occasional tickets and 30% on Navegante passes. It is a practical way up to Graça from Martim Moniz if you want to skip the 28E queue.

Tips for riding the 28E and other trams

  • Buy a Navegante occasional card and load a ticket or zapping before boarding; the on-board fare is the most expensive way to pay.
  • Validate the card every time you board, including when you change from Metro to tram within the hour.
  • Check the line page on carris.pt before you travel, because timetables and routes can change, as they did on 2 November 2026.

Bottom line

Lisbon’s trams run normally, but its hills have lost their lifts for years, not months, with Glória’s replacement aimed at 2029. Plan uphill trips around the 51E, 22B and 19B or the Graça funicular, and pay with a Navegante card rather than cash on board.
