Fuel prices in Portugal are forecast to fall next week, with diesel down 11 cents a litre and petrol 12.5 cents, ACP says. What drivers in Lisbon can expect.

Drivers in Lisbon and across Portugal should pay noticeably less at the pump next week. The Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP, the Portuguese automobile club) forecasts that diesel will fall by 11 cents a litre and gasoline by 12.5 cents, a cut The Portugal News describes as historic.

If the forecast holds, the average price of a litre of diesel will settle at €2.095, while a litre of gasoline will average €1.876.

What it means for drivers and commuters

Anyone who fills up regularly will see the difference on each tank. Because the cut is counted per litre, the saving grows with the size of the tank and with how often a driver refuels. Commuters who drive into Lisbon every day and businesses that run vans or delivery cars buy fuel most often.

Diesel remains the more expensive of the two fuels under the forecast, even after the bigger drop goes to gasoline. Diesel drivers will still pay more than €2 per litre on average, while gasoline will sit below that line. Because gasoline gets the larger reduction, the gap between the two fuels widens a little, and diesel drivers save slightly less per litre than gasoline drivers.

Why the final price at the pump may differ

The figures are a forecast, and ACP’s numbers can still change before the new week starts. According to The Portugal News, the expected cut depends on crude oil prices; if oil moves the wrong way, the reduction could shrink. The estimate reflects the market at the time The Portugal News reported it on Nov. 7, so any sharp move in crude before the new week begins can change the final figures that stations display.

The averages also hide differences between stations. Prices vary from one brand to another and from one location to another, so what a driver pays on a motorway service area may not match a supermarket station in the suburbs or a pump in central Lisbon.

What to watch next

The new prices are expected to apply from the start of next week. Whether the full 11-cent diesel cut and 12.5-cent gasoline cut reach drivers will depend on how crude oil behaves in the coming days, ACP’s forecast shows.
